The Colorado Rockies have sent opening-day starter Jon Gray down to the minors, optioning the right-hander to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Gray is 7-7 with a 5.77 ERA over 17 starts this season, but he has particularly struggled since May 13 while posting a 7.25 ERA in his past nine outings. The Rockies replaced him on the roster Saturday with outfielder Raimel Tapia, who was batting .308 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI at Albuquerque.
Gray appeared to turn things around June 22, when he gave up one run over seven innings in a victory over the Miami Marlins, but he followed that by giving up five runs and seven hits over four innings in a loss at the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

This deal will make Paul the second highest paid point guard in the league behind Stephen Curry with an average annual value of $37.5 million.
The breakdown of the $160M Chris Paul contract is: $35.6M, $38.5M, $41.4M and $44.2M. Paul is now the second highest paid point guard, only behind Steph Curry at $37.5M.
Houston first acquired Paul last offseason when he signed with the Clippers and was traded to the Rockets for several players and draft picks.
